Hello everyone, I'm new so I hope this question hasn't been asked before.
I've had a total of 10 guinea pigs in my life, but they have all died of old age or been given away. I decided to live without one for a while, but I couldn't do it for long so I just bought another. I bought her from a pet store and she is a baby. I don't know how old, probably 6 months. Her name is Stella, by the way. My question is, how long should it take for a new guinea pig to warm up to you? This question may seem dumb because I've only had her for 4 days. It could easily be that she is not yet used to me, but in my past experiences, my guinea pigs have always been affectionate from the start. I shower Stella with affection. I stroke her and give her treats, and I even built her an outdoor play pen to run around in and eat grass. I let her play in the pen on average twice a day for about an hour with me sitting by her. She is not very active at all, she just eats grass and sits under a ramp I made for her. I know from past experience that guinea pigs are very affectionate and vocal animals. Stella doesn't make any noises. She doesn't even purr when I stroke her, and I take I take her out of the cage to attempt to snuggle with her constantly, but no success. Does my guinea pig hate me, or is she just getting used to her new surroundings? Thanks and please send your advice. |

hello,
stella is already of breeding age when you bought her so she spent quite a while growing up in the petshop. petshops dont usually provide the proper cage (type, size, etc), dont spend time with the pets, wrong food, etc. so she might still be "traumatized" by her living conditions while at the pet shop. piggies usually don't take long to warm up to their owners. a week is about average. as a long time piggy owner you are understandably upset by her progress. i only wish that you won't get tired of her and continue to be patient with her. you could also try to get another one to be her companion because piggies are social animals. if you get one, please try to adopt instead of buying one and choose a piggy of the same sex to avoid over breeding. anyway, i'm so glad to know about the things you do for your piggy. please be patient with her. give her time. i'm sure she'll be a very healthy and happy piggy in few days. dugi(philippines) |
